We’re looking at some of the stranger cryptid stories that get tossed around, starting with the oddest of them all. The Mothman of Point Pleasant is widely known as a harbinger of doom, and yet the flying humanoid has absolutely no scientific evidence to back up its existence. It does however have ample statuary and tourist-y chachkas to fuel a small empire. Meanwhile, further south the The Rougarou, Beast of the Louisiana Bayou, Gets a Makeover. Originally depicted as a “ferocious monster that attacks the wayward and the wanderer,” this cryptid has had its reputation remade as an environmental protector of shrinking coastal wetlands. Our last cryptid today is A Bug-Eyed Monster off New Zealand. In 1971, a startled crew on a Japanese fishing trawler encountered a watery beast with enormous black eyes and a malformed face. While most likely a marine mammal the fishermen were unfamiliar with, the details were too sketchy to confirm anything specific.(CM)
