Dr. CS Matthews, aka Professor WHAM, considers Harley D. Rutledge’s Project Identification: The First Scientific Field Study of UFO Phenomena her “most favorite UFO book of all time,” and she spends three blog articles giving us “a complete contextual overview.” Up first: a Rutledge bio and why he got started on this study. Particularly appreciated here: Matthews’ speaking against the callous way some through the years have treated basketball coach Reggie Bone. Bone’s sighting, shared with members of his team and managers, got Rutledge interested in a properly-run field investigation of the 1973 Piedmont, MO UFO flap. Part 1 makes one go immediately to Part 2: Phase 1-Weird Photos, Unnerving Aircraft & Cunning Lights. This “first phase of Project Identification” had some outstanding sightings and perhaps a greater amount of “tribulation, terrible weather and stories.” Lastly, Part 3: Phases 2&3, Ongoing Uncanny, A Family Affair, Vallee Gets It Wrong. Here the phenomenon/a really “come home” to Rutledge. His conclusions about interactions between observer and observed are, at the very least, disturbing. A much longer vlog covers the material in more detail and features illustrations, many from Rutledge’s book. Whatever one makes of Project Identification, it’s a significant work and this an outstanding treatment by Professor WHAM. (WM)
