A group of bushwalkers in Belair National Park in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia are convinced they spotted a Tasmanian tiger. Their video of the encounter looks pretty convincing, but a Tasmanian wildlife biologist is almost certain the footage depicts a fox with mange. The way it walked was quite unlike any marsupial, says the biologist. But that’s not the end of Tasmanian stories. While some scientists are working on the de-extinction of the Tasmanian tiger in the lab, other scientists are reporting on an ‘Exciting’ New Thylacine Discovery [that] Shines Light on Tasmania’s Extinct Marsupial. It appears that when a black light is shone on some museum specimen fur of a thylacine under a fluorescence microscope, it glows! Just as with other marsupials apparently. Why? It’s believed to be an ancient form of camouflage, allowing animals to see their species from a distance. (PH)
