Dr. Emma Merkling, of the University of Stirling and the Courtauld Institute of Art, visits the site of the heart of the modern Spiritualist movement, a hamlet an hour outside Buffalo, and gives a presentation on on the material culture of science and Spiritualism. She tours the Lily Dale Museum, which houses the bible of the Fox sisters, as well as “spirit slates bearing messages channelled through famous mediums.” She then photographs every Spiritualist lawn sign she encounters (a lot of them), and sits at the “Inspiration Stump” to observe one of the frequent public demonstrations of mediumship. A visit to Lily Dale can be a life-changing experience. And speaking of which, Alex Tsakiris interviews Anthony Peake about his new book, Cheating the Ferryman: The Revolutionary Science of Life After Death, which reveals an extraordinary model of life after death that manages to explain a number of seemingly mysterious experiences such as precognition, déjà vu, synchronicity, near-death experiences and out-of-body experiences all at once. NDE expert Bruce Greyson, the Carlson Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Virginia, says “Peake’s explanation of your immortality is the most innovative and provocative argument I have seen.” (PH)
