Two years after making history for becoming the youngest lead actress to ever collect a trophy in EMMYs’ drama category (as we reported here), ‘Euphoria’ star Zendaya must be in just that after repeating the feat at the award show’s 2022 ceremony.
Monday night (September 12), the 26-year-old – who portrays “Rue Bennett” on the hit HBO series – bested Jodie Comer (“Killing Eve”), Laura Linney (“Ozark”), Melanie Lynskey (“Yellowjackets”), Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”), and Reese Witherspoon (“The Morning Show”) to take home the EMMY for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
By doing so, she not only becomes the first Black woman to win lead actress in a drama series twice but also the youngest two-time winner of any EMMY in history.
She joins an exclusive list of ladies who can say they’ve taken the trophy home more than once over their TV careers including Tyne Daly and Michael Learned (4 wins each), Barbara Bain, Kathy Baker, Edie Falco, Loretta Young (3 wins each), and Glenn Close, Claire Danes, Dana Delany, Sharon Gless, Susan Hampshire, Allison Janney, Julianna Margulies, Barbara Stanwyck, Sela Ward, Patricia Wettig, and Jane Wyatt (2 wins each).
In her acceptance speech (as seen above), Zendaya dedicated the triumph to her fellow nominees, the show’s cast, and its fans.
“Hello! This means so much. Thank you, thank you so much. Wow. To all the incredible actresses in this category, I’m so honored to be beside you,” she said. “Thank you to the incredible cast and crew of Euphoria, thank you for making such a safe space to make this very difficult show, I love you all so much.”
“Lastly, I just wanted to say my greatest wish for Euphoria was that it could help heal people,” Zendaya added. “I just want to say thank you to everyone who has shared their story with me. I want you to know that anyone who has loved a Rue, or feels like they are a Rue. I want you to know that I am so grateful your stories.”
