Against the backdrop of a country ravaged by the Russian invasion, Ukrainian astronomers have been tracking “phantom” objects they don’t think came from Vladimir Putin. Their resultant novel and controversial paper Unidentified Aerial Phenomena I. Observations of Events has been making the ufological rounds. Avi Loeb felt impelled to write his own paper on the Ukrainian effort, “Down to Earth” Limits on Unidentified Aerial Phenomena. Loeb’s Medium article summarizes his paper without all its fancy math. Chris Lehto gives more background to the matter and goes through the paper at Kyiv Astronomers Capture “UAPs Everywhere” Using Meteor-tracking Software. Mick West’s “Metabunkers” have puzzled over the Ukrainian paper since August 26th, per Ukrainian UAP Study: “Observation of Events.” Mick’s crew doubt the qualifications and methodology of the paper’s authors, citing major flaws perceived in the work. The conversation gets really interesting at post #93, where the Scientific Council of the Ukrainian Main Astronomical Observatory strongly “distances itself” from the paper, and at #99, where notice is taken of Avi Loeb’s article. Metabunkers and Loeb agree the Ukrainian paper’s crucial distance calculation is wrong, but Mick West differs from Loeb’s “artillery shell” objects, preferring flies instead. West cites Twitter comments suggesting cover-ups. (WM)
