If Francis Young’s book, Magic in Merlin’s Realm: A History of Occult Politics in Britain is as good and well-written as John Rimmer’s review, it’s certainly worth a read. Detailing “a little explored and understood area of historical research,” the book examines the journey of occultism and its influence on British politics, from the myth of Merlin through to the present day. And if you’ve ever wondered How Do You Spot A Witch? This Notorious 15th-Century Book Gave Instructions – And Helped Execute Thousands of Women. Melissa Chim describes the Malleus Maleficarum as “the definitive guide on witchcraft and demonology” of its time. Dedicated to not only witch-spotting, but also to how the accused should be tortured and killed, it fed the rampant misogyny of the period, resulting in the terrible deaths of many women. Probably not great bed-time reading. (LP)
